Sign Language Interpreter
Facilitate communication between deaf/hard-of-hearing students and Iowa Western faculty, staff, and students in a variety of settings. Assist in familiarizing faculty and staff with interpreting and educating faculty and staff about the needs of deaf/hard-of-hearing students. Require a willingness to work a flexible schedule; including some evening and weekend hours, throughout the year.
Associate Degree in Sign Language Interpreting is required. Iowa Interpreting License, provisionary or permanent, is required. EIPA score of 3.5 or higher or RID Certification is strongly preferred.
- Experience in manual communication (CASE, ASL, and SEE), as well as the ability to interpret in sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign
- Experience that demonstrates strong communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills, and the ability to maintain integrity and ethical behavior in working with confidential information
- Experience that demonstrates sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and disabled backgrounds of community college students
- Experience that illustrates a history of successfully collaborating with co-workers on a regular basis to achieve common goals
- Experience working with deaf/hard-of-hearing adults in a post-secondary educational environment

- Demonstrated fluency in manual communication (CASE, ASL, and SEE), as well as the ability to interpret in sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign, is required
- Comprehensive understanding of deaf culture, the RID Code of Conduct and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, as well as ADA laws, is required
- Provides sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpreting for student in the classroom and in supplemental academic instruction settings, including tutoring and supplemental instruction.
- Provides interpreting at scheduled activities, meetings, and events outside the classroom.
- Prepares for class assignments by reading textbooks, syllabi and supplemental materials.
- Confers with students, instructors, and/or other interpreters on a regular basis.
- Strives to continuously improve service by engaging in professional development during office hours.
- Assesses student needs and the interpreting situation before and during assignments and makes adjustments as needed.
- Serves as a substitute for other staff interpreters as needed.
- Serves as a resource for students regarding their responsibilities associated with using an interpreter.
- Maintains and submits accurate timesheets, interpreting logs, and reports in a timely manner.

$18.50 to $22.50 per hour

Considerable learned physical skill is required to perform sign language. Certain coordinated finger, limb or body movements must be performed routinely in the course of regular work. Extended standing or sitting is required. Constant repetitive motion and mental processing is required.
Work is mainly performed in the classroom/laboratory environment. There may be occasional off-campus assignments.
