Mayday / Disentanglement
Sunday 6 hours Class Limit: 24 Course #FIRE101-04
Why is getting a firefighter to call a Mayday such a problem?
First, no national standards exist in relation to calling a Mayday. Second, we do not teach or practice calling a Mayday, and third, we do not have specific rules for when a firefighter must call a Mayday. This class teaches firefighters how to recognize a Mayday situation and requires them to demonstrate the ability to call a Mayday under various emergency situations that they may find themselves in. This is a physically demanding class that requires students to work with full PPE, SCBA, and handheld radio under stressful conditions. Students who complete the training are eligible for the National Fire Academy certificate H134 Calling the Mayday: Hands on Training.
What equipment will students need? Full PPE with SCBA
Instructor: Rich Rodewald Council Bluffs Fire Department
Reading Smoke
Saturday 6 Hours Class limit 24 Course # FIRE101-05
One of the most important size-up skills an officer or fire fighter can have is the ability to capture, in an instant, the size of a fire and the potential for a rapid, hostile fire event like a flash over or smoke explosion. Often, smoke issuing from a structure is the only clue available to predict fire behavior. This session will give first-due officers and firefighters a 4-step process to read smoke and predict hostile fire events.
Instructor: Scott McFarland, Lieutenant, West Des Moines Fire
