ESL
Iowa Western Community College invites international students to study English in a safe and supportive learning environment. Our Heartland English Language Program offers small classes, friendly teachers, and many special activities that help you develop your English language skills. Academic fluency in the four language skills (Reading, Writing, Listening/Speaking) is emphasized in long-term goals.
"Our goal at IWCC is to help you transition smoothly
into regular, mainstream college classes with all the language
and academic skills you need to be successful. We are
here to assist and guide you before, during, and after
your ESL experience."
Long-Term Intensive Academic English Program
Iowa Western Community College offers five (5) eight-week ESL sessions per year. Our curriculum consists of five levels of academic ESL for each of the four skills. A modern computer lab with Rosetta Stone, English Discoveries, and other quality software is available to help reinforce your language skills. Students who successfully complete a long-term IEP will receive a Certificate of English Proficiency to document their achievement. The Heartland English Language Program is designed for students who want to continue or begin their academic career here at IWCC or at a four-year institution. Placement is determined by the Director of Intercultural and International Programs after the COMPASS ESL test is administered. To schedule the COMPASS ESL test, students can contact testing at 712.325.3278 or 1.800.432.5852 extension 3278.
