Voices for Change, learn the skills to become an upstander

Be an Active Bystander – Be an Upstander!

Iowa Western Community College holds standing up and looking out for one another’s safety as a core value and important component of campus life. One way in which our school commits to this value is by providing all students with bystander intervention training. We want each student to have the knowledge and skills to be an active bystander, who intervenes when they see a potentially unsafe situation or interaction. The bystander intervention training provided is sent to all new students via their Iowa Western email at the beginning of the fall and spring semester. The name of the training is Voices of Change and is available to students throughout their entire time at Iowa Western. Completion of the training is highly recommended due to the importance of the content.

Service Learning

Service Learning

Service-Learning, community service, activities, and civic engagement are essential components of the comprehensive education Iowa Western provides its students. Iowa Western offers a variety of ways for students to learn how to become active citizens in both the local community and in our larger diverse global society. Iowa Western students participate in service-learning projects connected to courses, provide valuable community service for local nonprofit organizations, and are encouraged to become active in civic issues.

Faculty and staff, in partnership with representatives of nonprofit community organizations, design service-learning projects based on two main objectives:

  • Meeting community needs, which helps strengthen the community.
  • Advancing the students’ understand of specific course content and related civic learning objectives. Strong reflective components are built into the course to help students consider relationships between their service, the course curriculum, and its impact on their personal values and professional goals. There are more than 100 nonprofit agencies in Council Bluffs and surrounding areas that utilize volunteers on a regular basis. There are a number of courses in a variety of disciplines at Iowa Western that include a service-learning component within their curriculum.
President's Honor Roll

PHI THETA KAPPA Honor Society

Iowa Western scholars who have completed 12 or more college-level credit hours and achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher are invited to become members of Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society of the Two-Year College. The society invites eligible students each semester.

In addition to being outstanding scholars, members of PTK serve as role models at school and in the community through their involvement in service and college projects. Phi Theta Kappa Officers are elected by their fellow members and represent the society and IWCC at local, regional, and international events.

There are many scholarship opportunities for members, including transfer scholarships to four-year universities nationwide. Each semester, new members are able to participate in a formal induction ceremony, where they are recognized by family members, fellow students, and college faculty, staff, and administrators. Phi Theta Kappa Scholars are also recognized at the Iowa Western Graduation Ceremony in a few ways; one optional way is through the purchase of an official PTK Honors Stole and/or Tassel.
