Who is eligible? Anyone who is enrolled in high school (or the equivalent) is eligible for CLEP. There are no age limitations. Students who are enrolled at IWCC may apply credits earned by CLEP examination toward their degree. However, new students entering college directly from high school are encouraged to consult with their counselor or with an admissions advisor about the advisability of their participation in the program.

How will credit be awarded for CLEP?CLEP-earned credits will be recorded on the student’s Iowa Western transcript only if they are enrolled and attending IWCC. Because students are not awarded a letter grade, test scores are not used when computing the student’s grade point average. Credit cannot be awarded if the student has already earned college credit for an equivalent course.

Will CLEP credit at IWCC transfer to other institutions? CLEP credit earned at IWCC usually transfers to other colleges or universities. However, Iowa Western does not assume responsibility for the transferability of CLEP credits.

Do CLEP credits from other institutions transfer to IWCC? Credit will be given only for the courses listed and only if the required score was met.  Iowa Western must receive a CLEP transcript directly from the College Board in order to award credit.

Will I be charged tuition for CLEP hours completed at Iowa Western? There will be no charge for tuition or recording CLEP credits on a student’s transcript.

Where and when are the examinations given? Examinations are given by appointment in the Test Center in Clark Hall, and can be scheduled by calling us at 712.325.3278. Students need to bring photo identification. The exams are 90 minutes long.

How will I know my results? All exams are computer-based. The results are displayed on the screen upon completion of the test, with the exception of College Composition that includes an essay, for which results will be mailed to the student in 4 to 6 weeks.

What can I do to prepare? Visit the CLEP website at www.collegeboard.com/clep to order study materials, including the CLEP Official Study Guide (approx. $25) and individual subject guides (approx. $10). These resources contain descriptions of the exams, sample questions and answers, test-taking tips, and more.

Can I retake a CLEP test? You cannot repeat an examination of the same title within three months of the initial testing date. If you do retake within the three-month period, the scores will be invalid.

How much does it cost? Students pay the $85 CLEP fee by creating an account at clep.collegeboard.org.  Students pay the $30 administration fee to Iowa Western’s Business Office prior to testing.

How can I set an appointment? You simply call Iowa Western at 1-800-432-5852, ext. 3277 option #4 or 712-325-3277 to set a date and time.
