Iowa Western Community College has announced that Ron and Suzanne Mahoney of Council Bluffs will be presented the 2009 Investment in Excellence Award. The award will be presented Sat., Sept. 26, at the annual Black Tie Harvest for Scholarships auction and dinner at the college’s campus in Council Bluffs. The IWCC Foundation Board began honoring individuals at its inaugural scholarship event in 1999. The event is held to recognize friends of IWCC and to raise money for the college’s scholarship fund. Ron and Suzanne Mahoney, owners of Mahoney Construction, were married in 1971 and have been pillars of the community in regards to their commitment to Council Bluffs. They have lent their support to important community projects such as the Lewis and Clark Monument, Veterans Memorial Plaza, Bayliss Park and the New Horizon Presbyterian Church. Suzanne was active with the Service League of Council Bluffs and the General Dodge Trust, while Ron has served on many boards, including the Council Bluffs Planning Commission and Chamber of Commerce.
The Mahoneys are being recognized by Iowa Western for their ongoing support of the arts, athletics and academics at the college. They are presently Reiver Boosters and Founder’s Club members, and Ron Mahoney serves on the Iowa Western Foundation Board. Ron Mahoney has utilized his craftsmanship on several campus projects, including the gazebo courtyard, the Kanesville Arena and the Foundation VIP Wall of Fame.
“I cannot think of a more deserving couple than Ron and Suzanne Mahoney,” said IWCC President Dr. Dan Kinney. “Their commitment to the college and to the students is amazing. Be it the arts or athletics, they can always be seen front and center supporting our students.”
Past Investment in Excellence Award winners have been Dr. Eugene and Linda Lloyd, Don Fenster, Colleen Geiger, Robert Laubenthal, Jim and Gertrude Woodworth, John P. Nelson, Wanda Rosenbaugh, Tom Whitson, Carmen Gioiello and the late Lyman Bennett.
