IWCC Hosts Holiday Event for Youth with Disabilities
Council Bluffs, Iowa - Throughout the week of Oct. 19-25, more than 60 Network TV shows will spotlight service as part of the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s iParticipate initiative to promote volunteering.
Iowa Western Community College is a leader in promoting and connecting young people to service opportunities within the Council Bluffs metro area.
On October 22, Iowa Western will host its third annual Halloween party for youth with disabilities. The Service-Learning office at the college will be hosting this free event in the Student Center from 4-6p.m. This event is designed to offer a safe environment with Halloween activities suited to the abilities of youth with developmental and physical disabilities.
During the 2008-2009 academic year, Iowa Western placed more than 800 students in various service roles throughout the community. Through the Service-Learning Department, students are strategically matched with agencies where they learn through volunteer service, which in turn benefits the community. Iowa Western partners with more than 100 different community agencies in the metro area on a regular basis.
As a state, Iowa is ranked fifth for volunteering and sixth in the college student demographic among all 50 states according to the Corporation for National and Community Service’s Volunteering in America report.
Iowa Western is a member of Iowa Campus Compact, an association of college and university presidents and chancellors in Iowa committed to fostering in students the skills and values of service and civic engagement to build strong communities and educate active citizens.
