Admission Requirements
Admission to the college is granted to all individuals who are high school graduates or the equivalent. We encourage you to review our Getting Started Checklist for specific requirements for admission.
Program Information
The Diesel Technology program of study prepares students to be proficient diesel truck technicians having skills to be competitive in the diesel truck maintenance industry. Students study all phases of the diesel truck including engines, transmissions, drive axles, electrical systems, and auxiliary systems. Instruction includes a wide variety of theory classes and up-to-date practical experiences. Graduates of this program are awarded an Associate in Applied Science degree.
The program of instruction is based on highway trucks. Many employment opportunities in the Council Bluffs/Omaha area exist for graduates of this program in the field of truck maintenance and repair. National and international employment positions are also available. A feature of this program is that graduates may also enter other diesel related occupations with the knowledge and skills that are attained in this program of study.

- Agricultural equipment
- Marine propulsion applications
- Electrical power generation
- Automotive (light truck/auto)
- Industrial (irrigation, power take off applications)
- Logging, mining, oil exploration, airport service vehicles, and railroad
Career Opportunities
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistic diesel service technicians held about 270,000 jobs, while heavy vehicle and mobile equipment service technicians held about 178,000 jobs nation wide in 2004. The job market is expected to grow between 9 and 17% during the next 10 years. The median average wage in 2004 was $17.20 an hour.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to supply my own tools for the Diesel program?
No. Iowa Western furnishes all required tools to complete the program of study and students may purchase hand tools for their jobs at substantial discounts.
Will I get a chance to work on machinery?
Yes. Iowa Western will give you hands-on experience repairing diesel machinery.
Will I be able to do an internship?
Yes. Internships are available for qualified students at certain points in the program of study. For more information, please refer to the Diesel Technology Program Guide.
The Facility
The Diesel Technology program is located in recently renovated Dodge Hall. Bright, spacious, well-equipped diesel classrooms, labs, and shop facilities greatly enhance the student's learning experience. Dodge Hall also features a 70-seat auditorium, computer lab, and cutting edge technology in its many spacious program-specific and general purpose classroom and laboratories.
