Student Rights and Responsibilities


Rights
  • To not be denied access due to a disability.
  • To receive reasonable accommodations that provide equal opportunity.
  • To have access to auxiliary aids/assistive technology.
  • To not be counseled toward “more restricted career objectives.”
  • To receive assistance from the Academic Support/Student Assistance Office in removing any physical, academic, and attitudinal barriers.
  • To not be discriminated against due to a disability or receive any retaliatory discrimination.
Responsibilities
  • To identify yourself to the Academic Support/Student Assistance Office.
  • To provide documentation of disability.
  • To initiate requests for accommodations by providing a letter from the Academic Support/Student Assistance Director to instructors with in the first two weeks of the semester.
  • To provide a minimum of a two week notice for all major accommodation requests (special accommodations of equipment may need more time).
  • To provide one-week notice to instructor and the Director when you will be utilizing testing accommodations.
  • To self-advocate and take charge of your own educational future.
  • To provide for your own personal independent living needs or other personal disability-related needs.
  • To assume personal responsibility for meeting with faculty, requesting assistance through supplemental services, such as the Learning Initiatives Center, and meeting Iowa Western Community College standards.
