Student Rights and Responsibilities
Rights
- To not be denied access due to a disability.
- To receive reasonable accommodations that provide equal opportunity.
- To have access to auxiliary aids/assistive technology.
- To not be counseled toward “more restricted career objectives.”
- To receive assistance from the Academic Support/Student Assistance Office in removing any physical, academic, and attitudinal barriers.
- To not be discriminated against due to a disability or receive any retaliatory discrimination.
Responsibilities
- To identify yourself to the Academic Support/Student Assistance Office.
- To provide documentation of disability.
- To initiate requests for accommodations by providing a letter from the Academic Support/Student Assistance Director to instructors with in the first two weeks of the semester.
- To provide a minimum of a two week notice for all major accommodation requests (special accommodations of equipment may need more time).
- To provide one-week notice to instructor and the Director when you will be utilizing testing accommodations.
- To self-advocate and take charge of your own educational future.
- To provide for your own personal independent living needs or other personal disability-related needs.
- To assume personal responsibility for meeting with faculty, requesting assistance through supplemental services, such as the Learning Initiatives Center, and meeting Iowa Western Community College standards.
