CPR AED First Aid

Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider

Structured to meet the certification and training needs for those involved in healthcare or those who plan to enroll in healthcare courses (nursing, physicians, dentistry, EMT or paramedic, CNAs and others). Includes training on AED; infant, child and adult CPR; foreign body obstruction; and the use of a bag-valve-mask device for the healthcare provider. Does not include Pediatric First Aid.

Heartsaver® CPR AED

For the person who desires to be proficient in CPR skills or for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory, or other requirements. Learn adult and child CPR and AED use, infant CPR, and how to relieve choking in adults, children, and infants. 

Heartsaver® Pediatric First Aid CPR AED

Required for anyone who is a foster parent or daycare provider in the state of Iowa and teaches basic first aid, CPR, and AED skills for children. Also a great class for teachers, foster care workers, camp counselors, youth organizations, coaches for children's sports organizations, and others responsible for children including parents, grandparents, babysitters and guardians.

How to Become a BLS Instructor

  1. Must have a current AHA Healthcare Provider Certification and be proficient in your skills
  2. Successfully complete classroom Instructor course (offer throughout the year)
  3. Monitor a CPR class
  4. Successfully be monitored teaching your first course within 6 months of completing Instructor course

BLS Healthcare Provider

The BLS Course trains participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations and provide early use of an AED. Students participate in simulated clinical scenarios and learning stations. Students work with an AHA BLS Instructor to complete BLS skills practice and skills testing. Students also complete a written exam. Fee $70

HS Pediatric 1st Aid/CPR/AED

Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid CPR AED is designed to meet the regulatory requirements for child care workers in all 50 United States. It teaches child care providers and others to respond to and manage illnesses and injuries in a child or infant in the first few minutes until professional help arrives. The course covers the Four Steps of Pediatric First Aid and modules in Pediatric First Aid, Child/Infant CPR AED, Adult CPR AED, and Asthma Care Training. Fee $70

Basic Life Support Instructor

Prerequisite: Current AHA CPR Certification. Become proficient in teaching CPR and First Aid classes to all levels of students. Instructor manuals are included with the cost of the class. Manuals can be picked up in Looft Hall or mailed prior to start of class. Monitoring a CPR class and conducting your own class while being monitored will be arranged with the Training Center as part of the requirements. Must register two weeks prior to start date of class to receive materials. Fee $400

Heartsaver CPR/AED

Heartsaver CPR AED is a video-based, instructor-led course that teaches adult and child CPR and AED use, infant CPR, and how to relieve choking in adults, children, and infants. This course teaches skills with the AHA's research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback, and guide the students' learning of skills. Fee $40

Online Option

Complete the video and examination online then simply print off your certificate of completion and bring it in when you meet with an American heart instructor to demonstrate your CPR Skills.

CPR Skills testing is scheduled the 1st Monday of each month at 10:30 am and the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 1:30 pm. You must call 712.325.3255 or email swiese@iwcc.edu to register and there is no charge if you purchased your online class through Iowa Western.
