About the Program

The certificate program is designed to train you to assist in becoming HVAC technicians. You will learn to troubleshoot and service HVAC/R systems. The certificate does not qualify graduates for the State of Iowa's specialty license.  

Program to Include

  • Technical Math
    Includes operations with real numbers, use of fractions, ratios, measurement conversion, algebraic equations, functions, geometry, and right angle trigonometry. Applications are designed to the program specific needs that you encounter in industrial settings.
  • Introduction to HVAC/R and Safety
    Introduces you to OSHA safety standards and the various components, tools, characteristics and installation techniques of HVAC/R systems. Environmental controls in regards to temperature, moisture and air quality are examined.
  • Forced Air Heating Systems
    Learn the application of energy sources and equipment as they apply to heating, ventilation, air humidification and filtration systems.
  • Electricity for HVAC/R
    Learn basic electrical safety, electrical theory, circuit schematics and circuit characteristics/symbols as it applies to DC and AC circuits in the HVAC/R industry. Electric motor theories, as well as specific information on HVACR electrical component devices, are covered.
  • Applied Practices I: Repair & Service
    Provides hands-on practice in servicing and repair of heating and cooling equipment. Students develop a basic understanding of servicing and repair practices as seen in the industry. 

Program Outcomes

Upon the successful completon of the program students will:

  • Execute mathematcal processes and use of formulas necessary for design, evaluaton, and installaton of HVACR systems.
  • Explain compositon and usage of HVACR materials, equipment, and tools required for installaton and diagnostc tasks.
  • Apply safety procedures and regulatons related to workplace and job requirements

Choosing a career as an HVAC technician presents you with an exciting professional path that promises job security and excellent earnings potential. 

The program provides the basic skills necessary to gain meaningful employment as an entry-level Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) apprentice or assistant.

HVACR technicians work mostly in homes, schools, hospitals, office buildings, or factories.  

HVAC technicians can advance from service technicians to installers, operation managers and distribution managers based on their hard work and commitment to their field. Entry level is $16.67/hr. Source EMSI

Non-Credit to Credit

Graduates of this program are awarded a certificate. Enter the workforce, or students who wish to complete an advanced degree may continue on to complete:
